Jo Hemming - Mixed Artist

Jo Hemmings is a Bayside-based mixed media artist whose work is defined by experimentation, sustainability, and the dynamic interplay of materials. Using acrylics, oils, inks, enamels, fabrics, paper folding, and various forms of collage, she explores the alchemy of combining textures and surfaces to create compelling visual effects. Found, reused, and unconventional materials often play a central role in her work, reinforcing a commitment to sustainability and creative reinvention.

Jo’s practice is primarily focused on contemporary portraiture and figurative art, though she occasionally shifts toward landscapes, botanical studies, and animal subjects. She thrives on creative freedom, believing that the best work emerges when an artist follows their instincts rather than being confined to a single style or subject.

As a passionate primary school art teacher, Jo strongly believes that creativity is essential to a child’s ability to thrive in all areas of learning. For her, art is more than a practice—it is the essence of life, a source of happiness, and a means of feeling whole. Her philosophy is simple:

Create. Create anything. Create often. And keep going.
